Hi all,

This upcoming season I am looking to butcher my own deer. Can someone recommend a good grinder to purchase? I will probably do 4-5 deer over the season.

Thanks!

Manual vs. electric... seems like manual is good primarily for small jobs, but that electric is better if you're doing whole animals.

Price... yes certainly a factor... would prefer not to break the bank, but also don't want to cheap out and buy a piece of junk that will need to be replaced in a year or two.

Started with a $99 cheapo. Thank goodness the wife ruined it one day, because it was a pain in the Butt.

Got one from Cabela's and it works great. They go on sale from time to time.

LEM and Cabela's both have some good grinders. What ever size you think you need buy the next bigger one. Personally I use the 1.5 HP LEM my thoughts were go big and buy it once and so far its worked out great.

I've got the Cabela's 1 hp. and for my use it works great, it's big enough to drive the 40lb. mixer if I ever pick one up. I only do 10-20-30 lb. or so batches so this is all I need. If I were to buy one for whole deer on a repetitive basis I would invest in the 1¾ hp. without hesitation. It's about the same as one or two good guns; you've got to have the tools if you're going to do it right. Regardless, enjoy the time spent, and it will pay you back big time every time you use it - packer grinding fees are .25 lb or more in some places.

Ive owned the big manual crank grinders, small electrics, and the grinder attachments for the kitchenaid. They all work. Emphasis on the word "work". Its work. Now I use a big electric. Grinds up an entire deer in 5 - 6 minutes.
My advice: figure out which one you want, then get twice as big.
FYI, we do a few deer a year, sometimes a caribou or half a moose.

hands down cabelas...I just got my 3/4 horse from there. here are the reasons why. If it breaks u have a place to take it that is or has a good reputation for the most part. It has all different kinds of attachments that other grinders don't have. It is reasonably priced compared to alot of commercial grinders....but the attachments did it for me after 2 months of research and consideration. I will be doing my first grind this weekend. will post pics when done.

just my .02

but I'm sure 99% of the people on here will tell ya cabelas

I have a Tasin TS 108 as shown. Northern Tools has a similar one for $99.99 http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...70_36989_36989

I've looked at the Cabela grinders. The Cabela Pro is a copy of the Waring Pro. The Cabela commercial grinder looks kick ass but starts at $329.99 for the 1/2 horse motor. The Cabela Heavy Duty says it does 2 lbs/min. The Tasin copy from NT does just under 6 lbs/min. The original Tasin TS 108 found at the Jerkyshop http://www.onestopjerkyshop.com/prod...products_id=47

can do a little more than 6.5 lbs/ min

I picked up the Cabela's 1.5HP around Christmas last year on sale for $499. I can do an entire dear in about 2 minutes. It takes two minutes because I cannot stuff it fast enough. They make all kinds of attachments for it and all the parts are stainless. You figure you do 5 deer at the processer and it will cost you over $200. One of these will pay for itself in 2 or 3 years.

Bingo once you pay to process several deer a year the price of a good quality grinder doesn't look so bad. Now add to that the fact that you know your getting your deer back and getting all of it. The fact that you also get it the way you want it done and the grinder looks like even a better deal. A vertical stuffer may be another thing you want to consider I finally bought the 15 lb one from Northern Tool this year and it works great and makes things much easier. I also have a Cabela's meat cuber and it works well too.

From a little different perspective, don't be afraid to get one just because you can't afford a big one. My grinder is probably 30 years old. It is 1/2hp and has a #8 or #10 neck, I forget which. We grind 5-10 deer and probably 100lbs of pork each year with it. Sure I would like to have a bigger one but the grinder is not the bottle neck in any of our processing. We spend way more time stuffing sausage or vacuum packing burger than we do grinding. I will get a bigger stuffer and a mixer before I replace my grinder. JMHO.
