Wood in the GOSM

So my dad just sent me a box filled with Alder logs, so I broke out the ax and started chopping them up into little pieces. While I was doing this I was noticing that they were bone dry. Which leads me to my question. Do you guys like to soak your wood before you smoke or do you think that this is just an extra step the you don't need. I would like to stretch my wood as far as it can go because it is not cheap to get it to San Diego???

You'll get a million opinions on this ...
Wet wood just takes longer to start smoking.
Try dry chips in a pan or chip box and go from there! wink.gif

My experience with soaked wood in my GOSM is that they smolder more than smoke. I use dry wood. 1 fist sized chunk in the wood pan will smoke for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. As long as you can smell the smoke, it's working.

If the pieces are pretty small, you might try soaking them, if there not too small, I'd just go with the flow.

i dont soak wood either, i also do not use green wood. just well seasoned wood and i get good results.
