New member from Colorado

Just found the forum - hi from Colorado. I'm new to smoking - just bought a Great Outdoors gas smoker from Gander Mountain (and then found it cheaper at Wal-Mart - oh, well!) after a salmon fishing trip to Canada. Found a couple of recipes for smoked salmon on line and my first batch turned out well.

I've decided I'm no longer going to pay for game processing in spite my wife's edict that "it doesn't show up at the house until it's in white freezer paper"! Guess she'll just have to deal with it! (Man, I sure hope she doesn't read this!) wink.gif As a kid growing up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, our family processed all our game. We had a smoker my dad made from an old fridge and turned out great sausage from it. 4 more weeks until elk and deer season - can't wait!

Hey Greg,
Welcome to the forum. I'm a newbie here myself.

looks like you've got a tough row to hoe to turn your wife into a skinner. What a shame!

Glad you are here. The folks here will help with any thing you ask of them. Please take a look at Jeff's 5-Day E-course on smoking basics.

Have fun, and do good!

Welcome aboard Greg,

Glad to see you found us. Always remember that a wife without something to complain about is not a happy person wink.gif So just think about how much good you are doing for her. 8)

Welcome Greg. I live in Superior, work for Qdoba in Wheat Ridge. Where do you hunt? Glad you found us, this place is great. Where/what is Gander Mountain? I've seen people post of it before, and assume it's an outdoor shop. Is there one here in Colorado?

Greg, Welcome to SMF. I used to process game for a living and although I'm happy that I can do it, I'm even happier that I don't have to! :P

Be happy that you have the GOSM from Gander Mtn. Sure the Wally's World price is cheaper, but then so are the materials. Look at yours and then compare it to the one at Wally's World.

JMack, there is Gander Mnt. store in Aurora and in Thornton.

Re: New member from Colorado

Welcome to SMF gkainz. Me and the boss always do our own processing, but just lil ol Missouri Whitetails. I can't imagine processing an elk. If we had them I'd do it though. Guess it wouldn't be too big a deal since it would come home in quarters.

Thanks for the welcome, guys - appreciate it!

JMack, the Gander Mountain store is in Thornton, slightly east of I-25, south of 120th in the old Builder's Square location. We've really gained Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops and Sportsman's Warehouse in Denver, so choices are looking up! Cabela's is supposed to still be coming to town very near me in Golden-not sure I like that, as part of the adventure of Cabela's for me is flying to Sidney, NE for a shopping trip!

I hunt between Kremling and Steamboat Springs, north of Red Dirt Reservoir. We apply for muzzleloader deer and elk, and usually get drawn for tags about every other year. On the off years, we usually hunt 2nd rifle season. So, now the motto's gonna be "from the smoke pole to the smoke house!" :-)

Chad, you're right - once they're quartered, not much difference between deer and elk, just bigger... :-)

The people on here are great. Great advice to be had.

Family and I just moved out of Erie to Illinois. Miss Colorado a lot.

Hi Chris - a very good friend of mine retired from the Navy at Scott AFB last year (I know - sounds odd ... long story) and is still living in O'Fallon. Small world!
