Im building a smoker from an old fuel tank, I built a firebox for on its side and im in the process of welding it all to a frame. I haven't finished the main part yet and was thinking of keeping the smoke stack down about halfway inside of the body and cutting a small square out of all of the grates. I haven't seen a smoker like that yet and was unsure of the good and bad. If anyone has any suggestions id appreciate it. Any other tips would be good too. thanks.

A rectangle/square diesel fuel tank. its prob 75 or 100 gallon if I had to guess, I just wonder if anyone else has or has seen a smoke stack retracted under the top by several inches or feet and what the outcome was. I figure it will hold more heat and smoke before exiting out of the stack but I figured id ask around first.

now your thinking, much better idea than cutting the grates, I still wonder how low to go maybe about halfway?
