So I was cleaning the nooks and crannies out back n preparation for a big party next weekend when I found a partial bag of mesquite chips on the top grate of my old chargrill smoker...ive no idea how many seasons they might have been in there, I haven't used that smoker in many years. The smoker is clean and the bag folded over but when I opened them they've got a slight off smell...kind of musty. I don't see any visible mold or anything so I was thinking about just spreading them out in the sun and letting them air out and using them.
Any opinions?

Walt.

Toss some in the chip pan and see how they smell when converted to smoke.  I would do this without food in the smoker.  I suspect they will be find as they are going to turn to carbon & dust in the process.
