Been a lurker for quite some time, but I'm finally getting a smoker, and have settled on the MES 30. I've read many people talking about Pros of Gen 1's, downsides of Gen 2's and i'm curious how to tell them apart.

I plan to order via Amazon, and don't think it really specifies much pre the generation.

Any incite is appreciated! Also, any recommendations on a thermometer/probe? I'd like one I can monitor away from the smoker, I've got my sights set on the Maverick ET-73 at the moment.

A little lite reading for you, http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/235820/masterbuilt-smokers-bear-s-thoughts-findings and http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/...umber-recognition-pictures-info-digital-units

I have a MES 30 Gen 2.5 and am very happy with it.

As for the therm, the Maverick 732 and 733 are very popular around here without being too rough on the wallet. That being said, the ThermoPro TP-20 is gaining ground plus one of their reps is a member here and has extended a 20 % discount code to all forum members, if you buy from ThermoPro's site. Reg price is about $60 and with the discount becomes about $38 plus a limited lifetime warranty on the probes and free shipping to Canada and the US. Details here :
