Hey everyone. I got a question. I am wondering about using pellets in my WSM. Or should I use wood chunks. The reason I ask is pellets are more easily available then wood chunks.I can get Trager or Louisiana grill pellets. Wood chunks I would have to order online or get from the Weber dealer. Any thoughts? Thanks

Pellets would probably give you the same result as wood chips, too much smoke initially, then nothing later.  Wood chunks work best.

I didn't think about your availability of wood chunks when I suggested the WSM

I know I can get maple. I can buy hickory and oak I think from Lowes or Home Depot. The other woods I can get chunk from where I got my WSM but at a steep price. Only 4lb bags. I was looking online and found some wood 10lb for 40 bucks. I was just thinking if I spread pellets in with the coals doing minion method then I might get an even smoke. I might buy a little bag and try just to see.

I know a lot of wsm users who like to just throw a splint or small branch ontop of their burning lump/coals. It will flame a litttle and kick ur temps up. But i never buy wood chunks. But local and split urself after u get a good axe and a sharp hatchet for making splint or chunks. Save the money on wood and invest in more meats! Just mho and 2 cents tho

Hey, if you get ahold of 1/2 cord of maple for a reasonable price that would be perfect! You're only going to use one split per cook so it should last a long time. If you can cut them in half lengthwise, even better.

I use splits in my WSM all the time.

I get all of my chunks and splits from this place.  https://www.fruitawoodchunks.com/

They have grown since I started with them but I'm sure their CS is just as good.  They ship using those flat rate boxes, so they will fill the box even if it gives you a bit more than you ordered.  When they fill the box, there is no empty space.  I swear they cut the chunks custom for the spaces available.  By this I mean that the chunks are on end and put there so tight it is like they are solving the most challenging 3-d puzzle you can imagine.  Now, I haven't ordered from them for about six months so some stuff may have changed.

I don't think you will find as many types of wood in one place as you do here.

I was buying some more chunks when I found this verbiage.  "Each 10 & 15-pound Priority Mail  box is filled piece by piece. This allows us to inspect the wood and fill the box completely. We cut some chunks into smaller pieces to fill any open spaces. You will have minimal air pockets in each box."

Check around and see if any of your neighbors are cutting down an apple tree. You'll have to season it but free wood for next year. If not most tree removal companies try too sell the wood they remove. Or kijiji is your friend
