Hello everyone, long time since I've posted. Just got done with a batch of jerky in my Little Chief and I realized I need an upgrade. Had the jerky in there for over 10 hrs (it was very cold out) and still had to throw it in the oven for a few.

Ideal price range would be around $200 or so, and primary use would be jerky and trout, but I'd like to get into more substantial smoking-pork butts, brisket, chicken, etc so would like to have that option as well. I'm aware of mods like the mailbox and various tubes, and wouldn't mind doing them, but would prefer something that can work standalone at temp ranges suitable for jerky and large meats. Wouldn't mind another electric smoker, charcoal is a maybe, propane is a definite nogo. Any recommendations?

If you are doing Jerky at somewhere around 160*, it will be tough with a propane or charcoal smoker.  I'd suggest a Mastbuilt MES.   FYI, I'm doing some beef jerky in one of my Big Chief smokers for 2+ hours finishing it off in the dehydrator for 3-4 hours.  All at 160*

Thanks for the fast reply! I've heard good things about the MES so will definitely look into it. I debated the dehydrator route as well, but think I'd get a more use out of a more substantial smoker. The little chief has put out a load of jerky and trout so I'd definitely still keep it around for smaller batches in warmer weather.

Another thing I did with both of my big chiefs was to install a 1,000 watt element with a controller.  Made it much easier to do the Salmon at temps I wanted to run.

MES reviews look good, also checked out the amazen products and they look interesting. Grills and smokers should start popping up at Lowes soon, will have to keep an eye out. Thanks for all the help!
