Grass fed beef. Getting a packer brisket.

Good friend of mine raises grass fed beef. He has been pounding the corn and soybeans to them for the past couple months tho. These are a Angus, Hereford cross. Sells some to friends. I've had some steaks in the past, and there great.

I asked him what he does with the brisket? There ground for burger.

Told him I'd give him $5.00 a lb for a packer. He agreed.
So this critter gets butchered on Oct 5th. Hangs for 18 days to age before getting cut and packaged.

I should have a gras fed never frozen packer from a 1300 lb heffer around the last week of October.

Think christmas is coming early.

You getting both sides? I hear the left side is more tender.

Raised many a beefer in my day. Never heard the left side is better.

But I'm only getting one side. Figuring this should be 16+ lbs... Might even push 20.. who knows

Reading the title, I was worried. I have tried pure grass fed and although Beefy, is way too lean and not as tender as good old Corn Fed Mid-Western Beef. But sounds like you have a good score on the way...JJ

It's an old wives tale. The tale goes that cows tend to lie on  their left side when out in the field, using their right legs to push themselves up thus causing the right side to be tougher. 

 

There's no indication that the left side if any more tender than the right side.

Have to agree with you on only grass fed beef. Flavor is great, but not as tender.

I've had some NY strip steaks last yr, and they were fantastic.

I dont know much about raising cattle, but can a 1000lb+ animal get enough calories (to gain weight) just from grazing? I remember my grandparents feeding corn every night to their two cows after a whole day out grazing.

When we raised cows they were grass feed up until it was time to pack on the weight. Then it was all corn.

Cows around here now get feed the spent grain from all the breweries. It's all the new craze and the demand has jacked the price of those cows up!
