smokin' newbie

Thread Starter

I'm Steve Gilliland from south central Kansas. I recently retired and I'm a part time outdoor writer. My passions are coyote and bobcat trapping and deer hunting. I welded for 30 years back in the day and have a pretty nice welder and shop. I am TOTALLY new to smoking. I bought a charcoal grill/smoker at a garage sale, one with NO separate firebox. I tried using it once and was so frustrated I don't ever want to try using it again, yet I want badly to learn the art of smoking meat. I have an old Montgomery Ward freezer that doesn't work and I'm asking for advise as to whether it will make a good smoker, and if the answer is "yes" I'll need advise on how to do that.

Thanks for the service you all provide and for your willingness to share your wisdom with total newbies like me.

Welcome aboard Steve.  Congratulations on your retirement and for taking up the smoking hobby.

I did a quick site search for "refrigerator smokers".  Hopefully you can find some answers here.

Could be that with your welding skills and shop you could save the smoker that your garage sale smoker.

I don't know so much about smoking Coyote and Bobcat, though.

:yahoo:Welcome from SC, Steve. I hope you will enjoy this great site. There are a lot of really good folks here that are always eager to share their ideas and tips. All you have to do is ask and keep on reading. Sorry, I don't know anything about the fridge type smokers, but with your welding skills, a good steel offset smoker should be a snap for you to build.

Good luck, good building and good smokin', Joe
