So y'all got me!!   Been looking for a smaller smoker and I'm convinced mwsm is the way to go for me.  Question is and I have read a ton on here and unless I'm over looking it, what is the difference between the 2 smokey joe's?

The silver has one lower vent the gold has two side vents. That's the main difference. Some add side gents to the silver, some add a lower next to the gold. Both smoke the same and benefit from using a charcoal basket. If you go with the silver an ash deflector over the lower vent is needed.

Your biggest challenge will be finding a pit that fits.

What do you mean about pit that fits. Is it the tamale steamer everyone is talking about.

I have a smokey joe in the shed looking to make a small portable one for camping and hunting trips mine.

Yes the tamale pot. They can be found but hard to come by. It was rumored that Walmart has the 32qt imusa in stock online again. The other brands that fit are Vasconia, or Hoffritz.

I noticed that you installed multiple vents on the side of yours, do you still use an ash deflector on the bottom vent or do you purely use the vents that you've added?

I haven't used the ash deflector in a few years. It rusted out. With the side vents I can run without it. High or low temps. Just did a hot smoke, all vents open I was running 375-400.
