New Door Seal Needed. What to use?

Hi All

I have bought a restored antique fridge for my smoker build but it didn't come with any seals on the door. I'm assuming I will need some to get the temp up high enough but I'm unsure what material to use.

can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm from Australia so I'll have to take any advise and source products locally.

Cheers Dan

I do not know if you plan to use the shelves, but if it is an older fridge, it may have cadmium shelved which is poisonous.  As far as gaskets, you may be able to use door gasket with magnetic stripping built in it like they use on house does made of metal.

Stove rope gasket would handle the temp for sure. Mcmaster carr has the high temp rubber kind. Not sure if they deliver to your neck of the woods though. Amazon also

Would you be able to use the same gasket material that you would use on a Big Green Egg?

I'm getting ready to start my own reefer-smoker build and will probably be using this because I like that it is flat, unlike the stove rope.

Good luck!

I'm in the gasket purchasing stage of my build right now. The flat gasket might not be the best pick because the gap between the fridge and the door would have to be perfectly plane (probably less than mm's difference) all the way around.

Ahh, good point. I hadn't even thought of that. It would probably help me a lot if I already had a reefer and could look at it then things might be a little more obvious to me.

Not sure if you followed ScooterMagoo's thread on him making "Reefer Madness", but here are a couple options for gaskets. I really like the lip on these gaskets so that you could use a flange to hold down the lip of the gasket. The first link is to Scooter Magoo's Reefer Madness and the second link is to McMaster-Carr where he bought his gasket. Hope this helps some.

When I bought my smokedaddy, I got a pamphlet with it that has a pic of scooters build. Very nice. I've almost read every fridge build in here. Great info
