New to smokin

Thread Starter

Hi , My name is Dean . I'M 70 yrs old and my wife and  I live just north of Annapolis Md., where they are calling for single digit temps on Monday night ...

I've grilled for years but am new to smoking ( about 7 months ). I allways wanted to try my hand at it and saw on a local craigslist an "old smoker for sale".

The price was right for sure but it did need some work . Its an old Royal Oak off set smoker.,and very heavy . So we brought it  home on the back of the pick up and spent two days cleaning and power washing, the metal was still in great shape. Then, after a couple of coats of flat black stove paint it started to look almost perdy .. ( I even faux painted the front metal shelves to look like wood )...

Since hanging around smoke forums ive learned a lot from you guys and I made some changes . I built a  fire basket , installed a baffle , chamber gaskets ,tuning plates, chimney extender, 2 more thermometers, thru wall thimble for temp probes , pressure latch , and i even picked up a welding blanket for cold weather smoking, and boy what a difference that made .

Ive found that working on these metal beast's is allmost as much fun as cooking on them .. and yeah the kids and grandkids love what ever I serve up off the smoker .

BTW other interests are music,Corvette's, and cruise ship vacations..

Sorry for the long intro but just wanted to say thanks for adding me to the forum.
