So yet another I'm building a UDS (what do you expect in this sub?)

No need for anything on top of a UDS to control temps. Wide open exhaust vents up there. Temps are controlled from the air intakes at the bottom of the drum. At least that'd been my experience, with my last two!
Just like controlling the temperature on a BGE

You must have never had wind blow in from your exhaust. It's just to keep wind out..
What I did because I did have a fair bit of wind blowing in the exhaust (smoke kept coming out of the intakes) was I took my charcoal chimney and set it on the exhaust upside down. I'll do something a bit more elegant later on. Still a couple odds & ends to take care of, put a hanger on the lid so I can hang it on the side of the barrel and paint are the big ones.

So far I'm loving it. Even being windy I used quite a bit less coals and the wood chunks lasted longer.

I've got a heat deflector and damper for UDS if you want it no cost. Let me know.
I'll take you up on that offer! Let me know what you need to cover shipping.

I've had a couple more smokes since last updated, smoked a chicken and a pork shoulder the other night. Went pretty well, temps didn't budge once I dialed it in. Got a couple Q-Views but haven't had a chance to load them up yet.
