So let me get this straight. I fill up the charcoal basket almost full. Put down the weber cubes and light them. The put some more charcoal on top. Wait until it lights and set it to temp. Once hits temp put wood on top.
is that good did i get anything wrong

Take about 5 large kitchen, light anywhere, matches. Take about 12" of string and tie a knot in the end. Lay the string in the middle of the matches, and with another piece of string tie the matched then all together. Pull the unknoted end of the string till the knot hangs and holds on the end of the bundle of matches.

Then tal the end of the string and dunk the matches in hot pariffin, hang and alow to cool. Wrap the excess string around the bundle of waxed matches. When you need a waterproof lighter, uncoil the wrapped string, then lay your fire above it.

Light the string when ready, the string is like a fuse, when it gets to the match heads they combust and the wax and wood will burn long enough to start your fire. Then you can blow on it, get a hair dryer, or a leaf blower and go to town.

They never get old, make a couple a dozen at atime and you can light 'em ever after a couple a days underwater.

For lighting my UDS I do about a half chimney of coals and put the weber cubes under the chimney on top of my grill. Once they are about 3/4 lit and ashey I pour it out on top of my basket full.

Torch or electric loop are the two easiest if you don't have a chimney, but honestly chimneys are so cheap they are the way to go.

I use Starter Stickks (sold at Kroger) which are made of pine wood and sap from the tree. In my opinion, it is the most natural way to start a fire. I take 2 sticks, make an "X" in the basket, and pour lump coals around it. I light the tips of the sticks with dampers wide open and after 20 minutes; I am ready to line the basket with hickory. The lump fires so quickly using these sticks that the hickory immediately produces flavor when loaded. When adding the hickory; I don't add them directly to the flame. I place them around the side of the basket so they get hot but don't burn. When the temp begins to drop I move the pieces of hickory in the middle as new coal and add fresh hickory along the sides. I am able to keep the chamber at a constant 290 using this method.

Of note, I just found a guy who sells hickory by the rick so I'll be adding logs instead of pieces. This should allow me to keep a steady temp for longer periods of time. My goal is to perfect a shoulder by 7/4/15. I hope this helps.
