Charcoal VS Electric

I've been dabbling in smoking meats for a few years. I built an extension out of stainless steel for my Smokey Joe grill and mainly used charcoal. The bottom of the grill rusted out, I bought a new one and I'm thinking of using an electric hot plate in the bottom instead of charcoal just to regulate the heat better. Anyone use electric, wondering how much flavor if any is lost using electric over charcoal/wood
