So I have the subject smoker for right now, I've seen a few people modify this pit to be more efficent. That was awhile ago and I'm looking to get some advice from folks here on what should be done to make this a better smoker. I have plans to get a better pit in the future, but as long as I have this one I figure I'd improve it if I can.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had one a while back. The biggest problem I had was leaks. Get the thing sealed up as good as possible. Next take out the grill from the fb if you haven't yet unless you are grilling or it will be trashed quick.
