I am a beginner smoker and need all the help I can get. I am looking for tips on methods, recipes, rubs, and equipment. I do not have a smoker yet but am looking for one. I do not want to spend a buch of money for one, and am really just looking for one that i could use foir personal use mostly and the occasional bigger group (20 max). Any information would be very helpful, thanks for listening!

$300 would be the most I would want to spend on a smoker, like I mentioned personal use with some "group" cooking. If by heat you mean charcoal then yes, I will be using charcoal. Also, I do want more hands on, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew (no pun intended) starting out. Central Arkansas is where I am from BTW.

OK then Yea a UDS or ugly drum smoker. It's an incredible cooker and easy to make. Mine was a kit...smokes and sears and looks nice. Big Poppa Drum Smoker, just Google it.

Welcome to the forums!  This is the best place I know for sharing ideas on smoking, grilling, curing, etc.  There are plenty of friendly, knowledgeable folks who really enjoy helping one another.  Just ask when you need help and someone here will have the answer.  Lots of very serviceable smokers in your price range, but a UDS or a WSM sound like about what your looking for.

I have to agree with FWI and Red WSM or UDS...UDS leaves you money left over for toys.......If your a hands on kinda guy You can build one for under $50.00... I think FWI/Keith built his kit for under $200.00 th_dunno-1[1].gif....He will be happy to tell you all about his Kit......Send him a PM or he will be back around in a bit........The 18.5" WSM does a great job... I think around $299.00.....With the end of season sales at the box stores, Now is the time for a deal on a smoker......Look fast because they will be gone soon.

Here is a pic of my UDS....This is not good smoke coming out.

I have done cold smoked bacon...cheese in it.....have hot smoked a 22# turkey..brisket over nite..pulled pork...ribs...yard bird.....chex mix......fish....and I'm sure I left out something....You can also add a kettle grill and a Thermometer in and still be under budget.......Everyone here will be more than happy to help you on a build if you want to go that way..Send me a PM if I can help in any way.

Happy smoken.

welcome1.gifto SMF!  We are so glad you joined us!

We love to see pictures of what you are cooking (or what we call q-views here at SMF).  To "upload the q-views" just follow the directions here and it will be easier. If you are using a cell phone, an IPad or a kindle, go to the main SMF page and click the Mobile button. Will make the uploads a bit faster too.

If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums and some guidelines of how to interact within the forums. Off site links are not allowed here at SMF per Jeff. Not that you have done anything wrong....just a little bit of FYI for new members!

If you need any help roaming around the forums....just holler!  Happy to help out!
