Reverse Flow Build - Stainless Keg Fire Box (50L / 15.5 Gallon) & Steel Drum Cooking Chamber (200L / 55 Gallons)

Hi Guys,

Long time lurker and first time poster! I'm hailing from Tasmania, Australia and am a huge fan of smoking and use SMF on a regular basis. I am an Apple Cider producer to have access to a lot of Stainless Kegs and have built a couple of upright smokers with them. While I have been able to cut my teeth on these, the biggest restriction is the size so It's time to upgrade.

I have always liked the principle of using general use, low cost items to make things. I also have a few 55 Gallon (44 Gallon here in Aus) drums and have been toying with the idea if making a reverse flow with one as the cooking chamber and a keg as the firebox.

Using the Feldon Pit Calculator, I've come up a bit short on the fire box size compared to the cook chamber.

http://feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html?cc=0,0,55,0,0,0,12705.00,4235.00&fb=0,0,0,15,19.5,3445.83,4235.00,81.4&ch=3,172.29,24.39&fi=0,0,3,10.34,1.46&fc=5.93,8.38,27.57

So with it sitting at 81% of the recommended fire box size, is there anyway around this or should I be looking to re design with a bigger firebox?

Cheers in advance for any help!

Here is a photo of the keg smoker (Brew BBQ) I made and am currently using. I'll post up a build when I get around to it!

mojo, evening and welcome to the forum.....  You can cut down a drum 20-30% and the firebox will work....  Too small a firebox makes for a lot of work keeping up temps...  Over sized FB is OK....

Please take a moment and stop into " /Roll Call/  " and introduce yourself and get a proper welcome from our members.... Also, if you would note your location in your profile, it will help in the future when answering questions about smokin'...   elevation, humidity etc....

We're glad you stopped in and joined our group...    Enjoy the long smokey ride....     Dave

I'll be hanging around to see this build. Your upright keg smoker is cool!
