Morning everyone

My name is Louis, I'm from Johannesburg, South Africa. We have a massive meat culture here but, alas, our smoker culture is lacking quite a bit. I experienced real bbq'ing on my first visit to the States last year and since then I have been trying to recreate the experince but I keep falling short. I currenttly use a Weber grill but it's just not the same taste and flavour.

So now I have decided to build my own smoker. I do however not have a clue as to where to start. All the info I have otten online seems to lead me to think that a ood starter smoker whould be a 55 gallon drum and to modify it from there.

Any and all advice will be highly appreceated!!!

Hello Louis and welcome to the fun.  Many good folk here with a load of experience that they are more than willing to share.  If you have specific questions just start a thread and someone with experience will be along soon to offer advice.  Spend some time doing some research on the forums, tons of advice and recipes already available there.  The trial and error method works well.  We will try to help you keep the errors to a minimum.  Several folk here use a weber grill.  A ugly drum smoker (UDS) is what you are talkin about.  Look in smoker builds and you will find a few how to's.  Before you take that leap maybe post some questions for our weber grill users to improve on what you already have.  Just food for thought.  Have fun.  Good luck.  Keep Smokin!

Good luck with your build project!  There is an entire forum section dedicated to UDS builds...if you haven't done so already, spend some time browsing there for plenty of good tips.  And if you don't find the answer to a question you have, just post your question there and other UDS users will come to your aid.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Regarding the Weber tips, tehy are more then welcome and I will defenitely g\have a look around for more tips on how to maximise it's potential but, the leap has already been made. I need a project to do now and I think it's time to start my love affair with smoking.

I spent a couple of hours yesterday looking around the forums and the amount of info is astoundin, even a bit overwhelming! But, knowing I can talk to some experienced people gives me a lot of hope and excitement!
