It goes under the firebowl to protect the outer ceramic.  Should be the first thing u put in. I have some minor paint chipping but never called because you only see it upclose. I have contacted customer service twice and both times they were excellent. You will need something else for indirect cooking. I use the kamado Joe heat deflector but there are a lot of options you can look into. Pm me anytime if u need help. Try Googling vision kamado and heat deflector for some useful info.

Thanks for the info. My DH said it went there, but I said 'no' because it seemed like it would be harder to get the ashes out. Thanks for the info.
I'll post some photos of our Q as soon as we decide to smoke. Parents are coming next weekend and they don't fancy BBQ. I might be adopted! Haha!

I use my shop vack for the ashes so I don't have to take everything apart.  Works great then I just dump it in a garbage bag. I use a metal poker and move the coals around when it's out so all the ash falls thru the hole. Then I shove the hose thru the bottom vent just angling it back and forth.
