I am not a tomato person....don't like to eat them....but I get and grow them for the family.  That bowl of yours is beautiful!!!!  What ya going to do with them?

Being a dummy....why is the season coming to an end?  Heat?

Kat,

The tom's are long gone and they were delicious. These are not plants you can buy at any of the big box stores. I buy seeds on line from places that specialize  in heirloom seeds. Your family will love these. You should give a few a try.

In South Florida the growing season is in the cooler months. I get the plants in the ground by the end of October. By April its too hot to grow them or any vegi.

How do you like that smoke Vault smoker. Is it gas or charcoal?

I never would have thought about their season being in the winter.  Interesting, but it does make sense.

I've got a buddy who retired from AT&T and now lives in Costa Rica.  He loves to rub it in that he can grow all year round down there.  He is on the side of a mountain about a mile from the Pacific and it never gets over the mid 80's or under 70's.  They do have a extended rainy season though.  Say's he is going to ship me a pound of his home grown coffee next year when he has enough plants of producing size.

And we're just getting started. Not in the ground yet, but will be by this weekend. Should be able to still be picking into July.

I buy my seeds from tomatofest.com. Some our favorites are Black Sea Man, chocolate stripes, marvel stripes, flamme, green zebras, dona, black cherry, Japanese black trifelle, black crimson, moskovich, & yellow perfection. You can read about each seed there. You will wind up with a good cross section of shapes, colors and flavors. If you are planting in the spring start amending your soil soon, get composite if you can, Alaska fish fertilizer ( this will make your plants grow 12 to 14 feet tall) and regular tomato fertilizer. They have instructions for growing there.

WOW that one big tomato and I know it delicious. What is the name of the seed?

Kat get some of those seeds and you can grow toms like that. I bet even you will eat them. They taste nothing like what you get in the store.

Those tomatoes look divine! You just can't beat home grown tomatoes. I just started some seeds a few days ago to see if I can even think about growing any (in containers and a greenhouse) at this altitude. We're still having snow and below freezing temps!

How are you growing them so big indoors? In pots, grow lights, hydroponic? Spill your secrets.
No I grow some during the winter, but usually smaller types (Patio and Bush Golitih. They sit outside during the day, then inside when we get freezing temps......yes, even in Florida.

The large one pictured was a standard Burpee Beef Supersteak seedling and was planted in ground. Got several of them in pots now waiting for Spring Planting in Garden. (Hopefully this Sunday)

Those tomatoes look great, and heirlooms are one of my favorites. I am impatiently waiting for my garden season to roll around. Currently it is snowing hard and my garden is buried under several feet of winters finest.
