Good morning guys and girls,
First off what a great forum. I do a lot of hunting here and am looking to further stretch my culinary exploits by building a cold smoker. Starting with duck and woodpidgeon plus a few trout that I have in the freezer. I have attached a picture of the potential smoke box I will use. Any ideas if this is safe as its a piece of furniture no longer needed.

The heat source will be a BBQ 3eters away and the smoke piped to it.

Anyways love the forum I'm off to bag some more game birds.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to our group MP. Keep us informed on your build should be interesting. We have a great bunch of folks here.

Welcome.Whats the finish on that unit? Smoke & varnish not such a good mix. If you are running a flue from a BBQ in your English weather maybe you should look at a stainless steel beer keg instead of a bit of inside  wood furniture moved outside. Just a thought.

That's a valid point. Looking at it it seems to be some kind of varnish finish, I can cover the box to keep it from the weather but was kind of worried the finish may become a problem.......back to the drawing board. May build a brick one next to the bbq.

I have seen a number of smokers made by Maori people here from beer kegs. I have no metal work skills I am a brick bloke, but if a couple of kegs came your way they are already food safe. Then its just a cut & paste to get a door ,an inlet & an outlet.

If a couple of kegs fell of the back of a truck or you have a brewery that retires then you can experiment.

18 gallon barrell shaped ,bung in the side best.Pull all plastic bits out. Good luck
