I received my new 2012 MES 40 and have been playing around with some mods

I also have an unussed Old Model MES 40 and will be doing a "Side By Side Comparison" of both Uniits.

Customers report that there is not enough airflow for the AMNPS to burn properly, when it's sitting on the floor of the New 2012 MES.  Raising the AMNPS off the floor, seems to help.

After a few measurements, I headed to the Dollar Store for some disposable Foil Pans

Here's what I came up with......

Dollar Store Find!!

8" x 8" Disposable Cake Pan - 3/$1

7 15/16" x 5 7/16" x 1 13/16" Disposable Pan - 3/$1

AMNPS 5x8 located  on the floor of the New 2012 MES 40

Factory Drip Pan installed

Not Much Airflow for the AMNPS 5x8

*** Notice the Wire I Installed to Keep the Door From Being Torn Off By The Wind?

Better Location for the AMNPS 5x8 w/Factory Drip Pan Installed

*** Preferred Placement of AMNPS 5x8 ***

Factory Drip Pan Removed

8" x 8" Disposable Cake Pan below for Drip Pan

8" x 8" Disposable Cake Pan Above AMNPS 5x8 to Protect AMNPS from Drippings

Optional Placement of AMNPS 5x8 on 2012 MES 40 Floor

7 15/16" x 5 7/16" x 1 13/16" Disposable Pan In-Place of Factory Drip Pan

8" x 8" Disposable Cake Pan Below AMNPS 5x8 to Raise It Off The Floor For Better Airflow

Great idea. This is my first post after joining the forum. Trying to decide which 1st smoker to buy for doing venison sausage and brats and am leaning towards the MES 30 or 40 or the Smoke-it. From the threads I've read, the AMNPS is needed with most smokers, especially electric, and I was just wondering how the AMNPS would fit in the new MES for the best results. Thank you for the "timely" thread!

I'm using the optional placement right now with some St. Louis ribs. I'm getting a great TBS and a good burn. This is a really good product!

Todd, do you know if people having problems are using pellets or dust.  I have used my new generation 40 4-5 times now just putting it in the bottom and have only used PMC dust, no problem with the AMNPS smoking yet, I pull out the tray and loader a bit and one row burns around 3 hours.  I have been putting the AMNPS in the MES during warm up but today I will try it without warming first.  I posted a low temp smoke awhile back and need to get a high temp post done later today.
