the idea of low temp cooking really hit home a few years ago. much easier to smoke than grill in 10 deg weather.  the idea crossed my mind while sitting in a hotel in Houston Texas watching BBQ pitmasters marathon one evening. experience has show me the typical gas grill like weber genesis and even weber kettle grills just can't get the temps up for searing.

I plan on getting a ceramic grill egg or similiar. my hope is the insulation will help get grate temps up to searing range. but won't find out until next winter.

i suppose a infrared/electrical sear station would work also.

Hello,Herge. Glad you chose the "Best Smoking Forum" on the Net.

Hope you call this home for all your Smoking Hobby info. - or - tips for us...

You asked for help in incliment Weather? Plywood , cheap and some door hinges will make it easy to store and set-up. Alot of us use POP-UP tents and Tarp(waterproof plastic sheeting)to make a little warm spot when out in the cold. Ingenuity is a great thing, and to save money , I do a lot of Scavenging for supplies (of course ask before snatching)

Have a Happy Holiday Season and...

I have a sheltered spot with a porch roof and sheltered on two sides, have invested in an insulated jacket for the GMG Daniel Boone and have done some testing without jacket on pellet use. Away with work at present but on return will do comparison test to see the difference. Will report back for those who are interested, once testing complete.

Herge, Living in Michigan  we can get really cold winters.  I built a insulated plywood smoker for the winter.  Lol, it looks a little redneckish but hey it does a fantastic job.  I have had no problems maintaining heat.  Good luck and Welcome to SMF

No problem maintaining temperature with the GMG, interested to see what difference the jacket makes in pellet use.

Not a lot of people say this but I miss the Texas heat !!
