I've been really busy the last few months & have not been able to get on SMF as much as I like, let alone smoke anything

I've noticed that there are points again. I remember these when I first joined, but I never really knew how to give or receive them?

Anybody care to enlighten me on this? I have look, but couldn't find anything on this new system?

In a nutshell, anyone can give you a thumbs up and write a little comment letting you know that they enjoyed a post. The system is weighted which means the more points you have, the more it means when you give someone a thumbs up. It also matters more when you get a thumbs up from a mod or admin than just a normal member.

You start out with 10 and it just goes up from there.

Ideally, this is a way to encourage folks to do a really good job of answering questions and such.

It is however, NOT an indicator of how good a member you are or how much you know and I hope folks don't "chase" points or make a competitive sport out of it

Some folks love it and some hate it.. we'll see how it goes I guess.

So can points be taken away?  And for what reasons?

I just noticed that I have 11, which is one more than I started with, but when I click on the 11 it says that I have received 3.  Did I upset someone and get some taken away?

Bigfish,

One thumbs up does not equal one point. It is weighted depending on how many points the person has that gave it to you and what their title is. It might only be a half point or it could be 10 points.
