Need a new Meat Thermometer for use with a Smoker

Hello All,

I have a Taylor 1474 that I bought a long time ago but I cannot find the instruction book that came with it. I searched the Internet and cannot find the manual.

Since I'm not able to get the 1474 working, I may just buy another thermometer.

I like the remote unit that came with the 1474. I have read many here like the Maverick ET-732 but the range, actually lack of it, seems to be a major problem. I have read that you can modify the 732 for a longer range but I don't want to hassle with that.

What do ya'll suggest for a good thermometer with pager unit?

Thermometors get a lot of bouncing around here. Buy a Maverick ET-732 and a Thermoworks Thermapen. Then try to buy something better and please let me know what it is that you bought.

The ET-732 has a range of up to 300 feet, or so they say, it's the ET-73 that has the limited range the folks complain about.

Some reviews say that the Maverick is only good for a few feet and if you go indoors it stops working. It also does not tell you the pager has lost contact with the main unit or if the probe goes belly up.

I want to be sure I get something good.

I have the ET-732 and haven't had any problem maintaining a signal up to 175+ feet, that's the farthest distance I've used it.
I would guess that the maximum range would be 'line of site', but never tested it.

How about the reports of the probes shorting out and very poor manufacturing? Some say they were not able to get replacement probes for a long time because so many are needing to be replace by the manufacturer.

Yep, the probes are a major issue, they do need to be babied which limits the usefulness and dependability of the thermometer. It's extremely unfortunate because it would be a great thermometer if it wasn't for that.

I can't speak to probe issues as mine is a new purcase. However the signal is great. Not sure about distance becuse i dont tet in my car and drive away, but it will go thru a brick wall and two doors into my basement, and that is good enough for me

I have been reading about the thermometer that works with the iPhone/iPad.

I may go that route as it looks pretty cool.

About the same price as a Maverick ET-732.

The two ET-732's that I got from Todd Johnson @ A-Maze-N Products generate an alarm when communication is lost between the base unit and the remote.

I've been using a Maverick ET-73 (older version of the 732) for about 4 years, and have never had it fail me. No issues with range or getting the signal indoors. I would recommend it without reservation.

I have the older ET-73 for a WHILE now as well. I did mod it with an antenna because I wasn't getting signal inside in my La-Z-Boy. I also drilled a hole in the battery case to turn it on/off easier. I swear I'll upgrade it when it dies but it keeps tickin. I like the iGrill because of the graph feature. That way I can see what happened when I was asleep. ;)
