Got my new MES40 the photo journey starts today!

Well, I finally bit the bullet and bought the MES40.

The cheapest I could find was at Sam's Club for $299.98.


Unfortunately, I hurt my back gardening before I could unbox the MES40.

But, I did take a few pictures of the box.


I plan to take pictures along my journey of unpacking, assembling and breaking it in.







Hopefully, I'll be better tomorrow and unbox this beast!

Great score 2005...I have the same unit I purchased a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving last year.

You'll have lots of questions and here's the place for the answers. I just put a new door on my MES40. I'll be able to help you if you have any leakage problems with the door, that's for sure.

You'll want to make sure and have some thermometers. You need to test the probe in the MES with boiling water and compare that to another thermometer so you can calibrate them. Also, there are spots that are hotter than others. Read as much as you can on this site because a lot has been written about them.

You also need to consider smoking with dust and pellets. You'll have questions about dry or wet chips, dust, pellets, flavors and the list goes on.

While your seasoning the unit check your temps and during the last hour check out the wood seasoning. You might want to pull the bottom vent out about an inch after you load your chips. You might also want to pull the chip tray towards the door about an inch. That will give you more draft. Leave your top vent wide open all the time and if you have another thermoter on a wire, thread it down through the top vent.

Most importantly, don't forget to take pictures!

Well, my back was feeling better today.

After I completed my gardening chores... I finally got around to upacking and breaking-in of my new MES40.


Here it is unboxed. I opened it from the bottom.

Here is the first load of soaked chips as instructed by the manual.

(Bad idea to soak the chips. Took almost an hour to get smoke at 275degs!)

You probably can't spot it but the is my 1st mod.

I used a velcro tab to store the remote on top of the unit. (so it won't get lost)

Congrats on the new purchase. I have an MES 40 and love it! Be sure and check your probe and cabinet temps though...the MES has a reputation of being off in its temps.

I cut around the bottom of the box and use the box as a cover over the smoker and then use a real cover over the box. A bit more durable and it is keeping it nice.
