Looking for a smoker

Thread Starter

Hello all, I'm new to this site and have never smoked before although I love bbq foods.

I live in NJ and will be using my smoker a few times a month year round. I'm looking for a smoker that will be big enough to cook 6 or so racks of ribs or a pork butt. I've seen that people like the Landmann and Camp Chef smokers. I'm not looking for a top of the line smoker but one that I like now and won't soon grow out of because it's cheaply made. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all

Welcome to SMF!

The first thing you have to decide is what kind of smoker you want. Gas, electric, charcoal, or a wood burner.

Then how much can you spend.

First off welcome to SMF there Joe. Now for your smoker I would recommend a Smoke Vault 24" propane unit. I have one and it's a great smaller smoker built well and easy to use. I think that you would like it and it can produce lot of really good food that everone around you would like believe me. You'll really like this place for there are a bunch of really good folks here that would just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking meat. Then if you have any questions you just post them here or yu can try in chat for a faster answer. If you are really new to all of this I would recommend that you look up and take the e-course. It is free and it will also give you the basics on smoking. So with all that said now go and get something to smoke.

As Mark said,  your first decision is how do you want to fuel your smoker?   Wood, Charcoal, Electric, Propane or Pellet

Each fuel has it's advantages and disadvantages.   If you want a smaller smoker that you can use a couple of times a month and is basically set and forget you want gas or electric. Stick burners think the flavor of wood and charcoal is worth the extra trouble.

If you have made up your mind about wanting to use propane I understand the smoker recommended by Mballi is one of the better ones.

Welcome to the forum, can't wait to see your first Qview

Thanks for all the responses. Thanks Craig I'm going to check out that ecourse

It looks like I'll probably go with the smoke vault although the new Landmann's seem pretty nice. Either way I'll wait until after Christmas to purchase one. The smoke vault is out of stock with amazon right now

Not sure, gas is our first choice. price $300 in that range. Seeing a lot of electric, what are the pros and cons of charcoal gas?

Welcome to the forum jbili!  There are a ton of great folks on the forum that know a heck of a lot about smoking that will help you out in a flash with your questions!

If you are going to look at LP (gasser) smokers, in my very humble opinion, I would also suggest you take a look at the Master Forge sold by Lowe's.  I'm by no means throwing rocks at Landmann, they make a fine product.  Just throwing out more options.  There are quite a few of us on the forum that have the Master Forge gassers and love them.  Again, just my $0.02.

Shout out if ya have any questions about the Master Forge.
