I became interested in smoking a couple of years ago. I can now say that I am officially hooked! I built my first smoker from a 20 gal drum and it did fine. But I wanted more! So i am in the process of building a vertical UDS with a side firebox. I have two 4 inch pipes connecting the firebox to the drum. Let me know what you think and any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Welcome you are going to like it here.  We are big on pics and love to share ideas.  I love your UDS with a fire box idea.

Welcome to SMF!  You will see many types of smokers here from the exstravagant to simple boxes and bullets.  If it makes smoke and holds temp they all make some fine Q

Welcome to SMF.. I love the UDS with the side firebox and I'm interested in seeing how it works.

How big is the firebox? It looks a little small to me but it could just be the perspective. It may be fine since I'm not a smoker builder, but I do know that the usual recommendation is that the firebox be about 1/3 the size of your smoke chamber.

Anyway, I'm interested in seeing how it works. Welcome to the forum and we'll look forward to more pictures soon

First off welcome to SMF. You'll like this place for there are alot of folks here that would just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking meat. You will find alot of good recipes and techniques here also. so with all that said:

Welcome to your new Addiction

Tulsajeff,

It may be slighty smaller than a third of the size. I still have some finishing touches to put on this smoker ( paint, rack holders, etc.) but i did fire it up the other day and the temp inside the UDS was able to reach over 300 degrees. I think i will have to add wood a bit more often but I am hopeful that this will work.

Coyote,

I live just south of Wichita. I noticed that you are from Ft. Scott. I went overseas with some guys from there.
