Texan trapped in Utah

Discussion in 'Roll Call' started by wpnsexpert78, Jun 30, 2016.

  1. Good morning from Utah. I am not new to smoking however I am new to SMF. I have read several forums from SMF in the past and enjoy the input from some of ya'll here, so thought it was time for me to join. I was raised in East Texas just North of Houston with a grandfather and family that found every reason they could to fire up our smokers as often as they could. I watch, learned and helped them as much as I could and even helped when it was time for the cookoff's back home. I recenlty moved to Utah for work and sure miss the availabilty of good seasoned smoking wood like back home. I also miss the cookoff's and the friendships gained over the years thru BBQ. Anyway for the last three years I have been here and for now this is home and I need to make the best of it. With that being said who is from Utah?

I have a couple of smokers and cookers. My main smoker is a Pitts and Spitts, I also have an Erwin Lonestar Grill which has a small vertical smoker, griddle, Santa Maria grill and steam table on it (mostly use this for big get togethers and parties). I am always looking for my next smoker. Would love to find an established team to belong to or maybe start one and see just how different the cookoff's are here compaired to back home.

    Anyway thats me. Thanks

Hey man where about are you? I am in Utah as well. Not sure what you mean by missing good woods. Tons of fruit wood here. If you mean mesquite....that's gross anyway. But hey I'm up for being part of a team.

  9. I know right, You can take the boy out Texas but can't take the Texas out of the boy.

  10. I am in Herriman, UT. I am used to Hickory and Pecan, only really use Mesquite if I am cooking on direct heat for fajitas, lol.

I am in Utah county as well....Herriman is not too far. I too am from Cali. But was born in Utah so I look at it as if I came home but brought my love of Tri-tip with me. I only have an Old Country backyard unit but hey it is all good. Need to do a Utah BBQ meet.

You are talking to a former Santa Maria resident. All you need is red oak, Tri-tip, corn, piquing of beans in a pot, and French bread.

  14. ammaturesmoker I am in the process of building a large Santa Maria trailer mounted grill for large events. I do not cater (because of a full time job) however I do like to cook so I am always getting sucked into cooking for large events. I was stationed in Cali and that is where I was intruduced to the Santa Maria and I am really digging getting back into it.

It sounds like you have some great skills there. I too work full time and only keep this sorta a side hobby. I do plan on tailgating at some BYU games this season as they are going to be having some cooking competitions with meat. I am converting my older stick burner to a propane unit since they only allow propane and pellet. I am not on the pellet wagon so I will try this route. My stuff is on order. I am kinda excited to see how it does. FYI if you can find some red oak, that foods would taste awesome. I know a guy in Aroyo Grande that might import to Utah.

  16. My Pitts and Spitts has propane assit but I only use it in the winter when I need help starting a fire in the box. So the only red oak I have heard of is the Q4U bbq truck around SLC uses it but it is in lumber form. I have found hickory here but its $999.00 a cord!!!

That's pretty pricey....I think you can do better.
