Question about collegen casings...

Discussion in 'Sausage Makers' started by a hooligan, Dec 27, 2011.

  1. I have used natural hog casings for sausage but never collagen. The question I have is do you pre-soak collagen casings like you do natural casings? I want to make some sausage sticks and have the collagen casings, just need a pointer here.

  2. no you don't soak them, and they are hard to twist if youe were gonna try that most guys tie the ends closed

They slide on the tube easier if the tube is wet, but you don't need to soak them.

NO don't soak them and if yu hav the same delimma that I do you can't get small casings such as 19-22mm that aren't collagen. I really don't like having to tie each end of them either. But if I want snack sticks for the wife then I have to tie the ends. You know the answer to that wife wants......wife gets and I tie each end.......................wife HAPPY.............me Happy

  5. Thanks for the info guys. I have some 17mm collagen casings that I got from thesausagemaker.com that I want to try out. I'll just use butchers twine to tie the ends off.

    Nope dont soak em.

I did once to see how they would work. I got pretty decent results but dont do it if you dont have enough casings.
