That's northwest Pennsylvania for those that can't quite figure out the abrev's. I live in the Erie area. I have been gas grilling for many years now and have just decided to move up to the smoker. My brother-in-law has an Old Smokey electric and he made us some great ribs, and now I'm hooked. I have one on the way as we "speak". We went to his east coast beach place and he put the ribs in, we went to the beach for the day, and when we got back we feasted! I like that idea! I'm also looking forward to trying out many new things, so that's why I've joined here. My wife and I both like to cook, she's mostly indoors and I'm mostly out. I do like playing on the stove at times also. Looking forward to some good times with you and my smoker!

It's been getting a little chilly up here. Not too bad yet. I'm getting to hate winter here. Not looking forward to it at all. I do have a garage where I can do my winter smoking [IMG]. Have any good tips about that?

Hi Lou! Welcome to the forum!

I've never run a smoker in a garage yet, just with a temporary roof and wind breaks. I would imagine that fire safety would come to mind, as well as ventilation issues once the smoke starts and the meat is could burn your eyes pretty badly, of course. Keep it clear of combustible materials and any containers of flammables especially...the ventilation will definately help with this, too.

Cruise around on the different forums for ideas and some tips when you get curious, or just ask...there's no such thing as a dumb question here.

Enjoy your new found love of the smoke!

I already do some grilling in the garage. Like when I have that hankerin' for a good steak around Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, etc. I make sure I'm safe and away from the gas cans, vehicle gas tanks, etc. With the Old Smokey I don't think I'll have any smoke prob's cus it's a sealed unit. But I have heard of temp problems when smoking ood in cold climates.

Everyone here enjoys seeing the Qview so be sure to post plenty of pics...

Large ones that us old people with bad eyes can see.

When you uploading to Photobucket I always use the Large IMG setting, 640 x 480 it is a nice size...

How to post Qview to Forum:
  10. Welcome Lou, This site has a wealth of info and plenty of people willing to help. As far as the sealed unit you're getting, what exactly does that mean? Surely the smoke has to go somewhere (doesn't it?).

Welcome to the SMF. Don't worry about the smoke cause I heard that it gets so cold in NW PA that the smoke freezes solid then falls to the floor with a thud. Then you just sweep it out with any snow that drifted in thru the open garage door over night. [IMG] At least thats what I heard.

Welcome Lou! It's nice to know I'm not the only one here from NW PA. I use my GOSM in my garage in the winter also. My only problem is the smoke comes in the house a little since my garage is attached to the house, but you'll be O.K.
These guys here are great and a wealth of great info. This is by far the best forum out there.

Just a plug for Jeff's recipes- they are a must have! They are both great and when you buy them it helps fund his sites. The bbq sauce is the best I've had. I add a little extra brown sugar and less cayenne though.

Welcome, im also a western PA guy, just about an hour south of you in New Castle. I smoke im my garage all the time with my brinkman electric. Sometimes when its cold i have all the doors shut and i just sit in there and take in all that wonderful smoke. Or ill open the doors a bit. It looks like my garage is on fire and i cant believe that none of my neighbors have called the fire department yet.
