I'm new to the life of smoking food, I've been reading Jeffs course, but I have a question. I have a digital thermometer that has a silicone insulated wire, is this safe for using in the smoker or do I need to find one that has a metal braided covered wire? I just bought my smoker from the bass pro shop, it's a propane vertical smoker the Landmann smokey mountain 2 drawer model. If I do need a different thermometer which one is highly recommended? Thanks

welcome to the SMF, I use the taylor didis and have not had any problems with the silicon coated probe other than it gets cut easier than a steel braided probe but the steel braided can kink and get weird so its a double edged sword.

Welcome to the SMF. You should be ok with that type of probe cable. I have both types, and I find no difference in thier care or durability. It's all good my friend.

It's also free and it will give you the basics of smoking. So after all of that you just need to go grab something to smoke and if you have any question just post them here and we will answer it quickly so you don't have any mishaps with your smoke.

Welcome to the forum Greenhorn. My themo's all have the covered wire & one of them tweaked because I was closing my lid on top of it. I was not happy. There was no damage done but I would rather have them in "Great" shape than "Ok" shape. I ordered two more & my collection stands at 4. None of them are plastic. I have found a hole to stick my probes through, so no more tweaking, if you will. I see it this way, if it breaks, time to upgrade. Spare thermo's are a great thing to have around. Enjoy the forum. You are in the best hands possible with these guys.
