Well Schnucks did it again. $1.19/LBS for Butts. So Two of them went on the smoker this morning .

I always put them in pans on the smoker.(no mess in the smoker ). I see most people just put them on the grate .

I want to see if there is a differents between the two ways. One is in a pan and one is on the grate.

I put a pan under the grate to catch all the juiece from it.

to foil or not to foil ??????? I have foil every butt I have smoke. so the one in the pan will get foil at 170. and the

one on the grate will go without foil (if I don't run out of time tonight)

here some Q-view to get the day started. I got the Butts on at 8am. Hope the unfoil butt is done before bedtime tonight.

cant pass up prices like that !!!!!!!!!!

    my playtoys!!!!

lots of room under the basket for ash to fall

.found these in the shed so they look like they could be good divider for my basket

love my ECB !!!! use it everytime I smoke. Its great for holding my chimney starter [IMG]

just bout ready to start smoking !!!!!!!

here the first one , on the grate with the pan under to catch the juieces

will see if there is a differents between in a pan or on the grate. one in pan will get foil at 170. one  on the grate

no foil all the way !!!!! (hope its hits 205 before midnight !!!!)

light blue smoke going on . I have tuning plates in the smoker. the temp is within 10 degree from one end to the other.

I will update with Q-view as the day go on.

Excellent price. I jumped on one for $1.49 recently. About the best I have seen in a long while.

Looks great, I will be watching this, have never cooked one in a pan, nor foiled one for that matter. Will be interested in your findings here.

1.19 a # you stole them. Wish I could find a deal like that, I have a bunch of people wanting PP, 1.49 a few weeks ago was the best I could do.

Seems it wasn't that long ago that butts were always around 1.09 to 1.29 a # now they run closer to 2.00 #.

Keep us updated on this please.

Schnucks had it for same price on labor day. here the link to that post I did http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/111404/cheap-butts

I like the pan because there no clean up in the smoker . I just want to see if it get more smoke and Bark by not putting it in a pan and not foiling it .

At 6pm i'm going out to take my first look at them. They will be on for 10 hours and probe them for first time. I always probe them when i put them on.

it's killing me not knowing what the IT is.[IMG]
  8. Thanks for the heads up on the special on butts at Schnuck's.  I'll have to see if they are offering the same deal here in Columbia.

Just took my first look, they look great . bark looks great thanks to Jeff's rub. The IT on both was right around 180 (10 hours on smoker at 230/240 most of the time)

don't see any difference in the bark between the one on the grate and one in the pan . The pan butt has a lot of juice in the pan . The pan under the one on the grate has very little juice in it.

I would think it would have bout the same. [IMG]

    here some more Q-view

now can't wait to eat some PP tonight !! made some of Jeff's BBQ sauce with some honey

    thanks for looking

Beautiful color to your butts, there. Very nice! Pork shoulders (butts / picnics) are very fatty and that's what gives them their unique barbecuing happiness. You might want to skim the juice from the one in the pan before doing anything with it...the juice, I mean. the meat is fine!

thanks, pulled them at 205 , let them sit for awhile wrap up . they just fell apart .

as far as the juice we strain them then put in frig. will scrap the fat off when it settle at the top. Wife love the gravy i make with it.

The one driping in the pan most likely made a fatty steam of goodness that was on both butts till you wraped. Was their a diffrence in firmness of the bark aka.(soggy bark)?

It's the fall hog kill and butts are more plentiful as buyers start stockpiling hams for Easter; but prices are holding higher than normal; just a few retailers taking advantage of lower wholesale price points.
