Just curious, if I ended up getting the Char-griller Duo, is the side fire box absolutely necessary for smoking, or could I get away with using fire bricks as a barrier like I was going to do with the Weber One-touch?

Also, I heard the Duo was prone to rusting up fairly quickly....are there any tips for getting it to last longer?  Thanks!

Yes is the answer to your first question, fire nearest the air intake and food to the other side of the cook chamber.

The answer to your second question is keep it inside out of the elements, when not in use, to prevent rust. If it does begin to rust wire brush and repaint the outside with high heat stove paint.
