Better Temp control on my GOSM

MY temps would be real hard to keep stable on my new GOSM run good for a bit then jump up etc.

found a bag of Lave rocks I never used put them in a square grill pan wok like this one shown below, fits perfect on the rack that holds the wood cup. I just put my wood on top of the rocks burned great and the temp stayed pretty much within 10 degrees the whole time at least so far on my test run making some chicken quarters. just wondering if anyone else has tried this method in there GOSM ??

Interesting concept.. so the rocks work as a heat sink to level out the temps?

I've used lava rocks in my gas smoker. I use it primarily for jerky and it works great.

Seems to be working so far using it right now and temp holding in the mid 230's even seems to give me a quicker recovery time after I open it to spritz the meat or add wood  here's a pic of it in the GOSM

I have the same tray in my SFB  on my char griller. I bought it at lowes as a substute to the wire basket everyone has.

I use the ceramic rocks and they work pretty good I must say.

Yep, used the same thing until I fully converted my GOSM : Charcoal over to Propane. Not sure this would really be a fix, elevating the coals will help with not choking due to ash buildup, which causes the temps to fall. What I would do is use Playbox Sand in the Water Pan instead of water. Higher temps and more consistent heat.

Now thats interesting all right I have a GOSM and I haven't needed anything to regulate the smoking temp. They have stayed about the same over the years of smoking too. I do use them in my regular grill unlike alot of freinds of mine think I'm crazy but it's my way darn it.

He is using gas, he is using the lava rock and grill pan in place of the smoker box directly over top of the burner.

And it is a pretty interesting concept, might help some folks that are having problems wit the wood burning up too quick.
