Hi all, I just found this forum and the little scanning around I've done it seems to be awesome! I have always used the "traditional" fire box on the side smoker with great results and will continue to do so. I was on craigslist today and saw a guy giving away a Cabelas 7 in 1 Grill\smoker. I figured for free why not.. Well I got it and I am a curious if anyone else has any experience with similar smokers. I haven't even cleaned it yet, but at first glance it seems that it might be hard to maintain a steady temperature. Also, the "door/vent" isn't very big, probably couldn't use more than little chunks of wood once I got my initial fire going. I am also curious about the "fryer\boiler". I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or pros and cons to help me out. Like I said it was free and it won't hurt my feelings at all if it a piece of crap, I'll just continue using my old smoker and maybe use this for a grill while camping or something. Pictured is my old smoker and the cabelas smoker. Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome to the SMF Tom! I have a Brinkmann All-In-One which is similar to the one you picked up. As a matter of fact, I have it fired up right now with a brisket inside! I find that it's really pretty easy to keep the temperature at a constant with only the usual tending required. I started it a little more than an hour ago and set it to 225* (just over my target temp of 200*), added my brisket and soaked chips and the temp dropped to 202* and has stayed within a couple of degrees since.

As for the fryer portion, our pot/basket combo is a little on the small side so it's actually great for fish, chicken, fries, etc., but you won't get a turkey in there to be sure! We do have a larger pot for a turkey but to me the base is just not wide enough to be truly safe.

Hope that helps a bit!
