I am new to smoking & have a pre-packed brisket in the freezer. It has a flavor packet in it & it's intended to be boiled & made into corned beef. Can I smoke this or should I get a brisket that's not meant for corned beef. Is there a difference in the meat? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al

corned beef is made from brisket by curing it, read on the packet, if they tell you to marinade the brisket in the stuff from the packet for any amount of time then I would suspect you have a plain brisket that needs cured, if the packet is only flavoring and the brisket is allready cured into corned beef thats ok to as several guys have made some pretty good looking smoked corned beef, The Dude Abides has posted a couple very nice looking ones. Welcome to the SMF

Can you post a picture of the label? What's the weight of this cut? Does the label specifically say "Corned Beef Brisket"?
Does it look anything like this?

What makes you say that it's intended to be boiled & made into corned beef? What is the sodium content? That'd be a pretty good tip as to what you've got.

If it's a regular brisket, there are tons of threads on here with lots of advice.

If it's truly a Corned Beef Brisket. I've done a few of those and been very happy with the results. Here's a link to the last couple I did.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

You are right, that is a corned Brisket and will be great smoked(Pastrami).
Howeveryou'll not get the salting out of it if you want Brisket.
Try a flat(a cut of brisket without the Point) and do that along with the Corned one. Variety!

Welcome Al.
Seriously, do yourself a favor and smoked that bad boy. Trust me, you'll love it!
Nothing like making your own pastrami.
