Hello from South Texas

Hello everyone, my name is Tom. I've been lurking in this forum for some time now and thought I'd go ahead and join. There's lots of useful info plus most of the members seem laid back. I really enjoy the "Q VIEWS" so I snapped some photos during my last smoking.

Anyway, I'm in South Texas and I've been regularly smoking (meat) for about a year plus. I'm still learning but have picked up some great pointers on here and learned a thing or ten the hard way (trial and error).

I've also been fine tuning my smoker during this time which is a homemade vertical smoker without a seperate fire box. The coals/wood sit at the bottom and it has 6 divisions where I can slide the grills in and out. The entire thing is made out of 1/8" steel (except the grills). I made two grills for it out of 3/8" solid square bar and I was able to recyle another one from a cheapie burger and hotdog rig. It's heavy as heck and ugly but I think it does a fine job and every once in a while somebody will knock on my door to inquire about it when I leave it out in front. I'll see if I can attach a picture or two of it.

looks like it's had more than 1 lb. of meat thru it, for sure! Nice smoker! Wouldn't take much to brush 'er down and paint 'er up, either!

Thanks Pops; as you see, she's been fully exposed to the elements. Hopefully a wire wheel and some good paint will boost her curb appeal. I'm assuming Rustoleum would be the best paint to slow the rusting.

Thanks, I'll have a QVIEW posted as soon as I can get the pics uploaded to the hosting website.

Do a Search on Paint and you'll come up with several threads discussing what to use; primarily you want to use a high temp primer and a high temp paint; several places on the net to get it and also look at BBQ supply places near you too, or big box supply houses (Home Depot, etc.).
