Newby here, need help

Hi Guy’s,
Newby here from Muskegon, Michigan. I need some advice if you could help.

At a local auction I picked up a Heavy Duty Brinkman professional series Model #810-3214-0 charcoal grill/smoker. Cooking surface is about 19†x 31â€

Need help on two items,

#1) There is light rust on the outside, but moderate to
Medium rust on parts of the inside box as well as parts of the fuel tray. No problem getting this sandblasted but - should I paint the interior afterwards.

Brinkman’s site recommends only applying oil & seasoning it - but I don’t think they are taking in to account the severity of the rust? What do you suggest?

#2) The food grate is missing. I can purchase a new set from Brinkman but about $100.00 in cost plus shipping. I see by many of your pictures - the use of expanded metal as a cooking grate.
Now I have metal suppliers in town - but is this ok for food service? Is there a special type or specification?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan.

First suggestion Dan, make a Roll Call Forum post. Kinda a tradition, or a leetle right of passage.

Oil and season should be fine after blasting. The meat has no contact with those areas <ideally> anyway.

Expanded metal with a stiffining "edging" crimped/welded on is an excellent grate. Be sure to wash and season it as well!

A minor touch up with paint won't hurt, but I wouldn't worry about the rust so long as it's structurally sound you should be good to go.

Re the expanded metal, just make sure its not made of lead biggrin.gif You might also be able to find universal parts at the box stores that'll fit it. I've been known to pick up a used grill (thanks Craigslist) for the grates alone.
