My wife wants to buy a smoker for me for dads day coming up (lucky me!).
I've never used a smoker before but have always wanted to learn. Question is will this be able to replace my charcoal grill or will this be "in addition to" the grill?
The smoker I am looking at is the Bar B Chef from Barbeques Galore (there is a store down the street from me). From the reading I've done thus far it looks as though this smoker has most of the recommended mods already done to it out of the box. http://www.bbqgalore.com/smokers/bar_b_chef_offset
It would be ideal if I can use this as either a smoker or a straight up grill depending on what it is I'm cooking.

Thanks for listening (reading) and I look forward to any and all opinions!

Most offsets have a charcoal tray in the main chamber to enable its use as a grill. And the offset firebox is used to hold the charcoal, wood etc when smoking in the main chamber.

Nice setup actually.

I grill on my Chargriller all the time, and I also smoke on it all the time.
I had been using this grill for a few years:

Walmart cheapo. I have had several similar grills over the years...

Anyway, when I got my Chargriller, that old grill turned into a stand for me to start my chimney, and a garbage can to dump my ash pan into.

I usually grill on Fridays after I get home from work, and start smoking either late Friday night (after eating whatever I grilled), or Saturday morning. The Chargriller works well for both.

I am sure the bar-b-chef also does both of them well. You probably won't need to worry about a second grill (unless you keep your old grill to use as an ash pan dump and chimney stand).

That does look like a nice smoker.

I have the CGSP and use it for both grilling and smoking. But i still also have the ecb and the weber kettle. After all a grill/smoker is another tool and a man can never have too many tools

Like Dawg i have used the weber to hold my chimney on occassion. Recently i've been using the weber for the smaller grilling chores and the cgsp for the larger stuff. All depends on what i'm doing.

I was also looking at getting that one, but I was told by BBQ Galore they that are out of stock at every store and not sure when they are getting any in

so I started looking at other models.

Yup, I was also told they are sold out valley wide (here in AZ). However, he did add that they are expecting new shipments by the end of June. So, I may have to wait a little longer for my Dad's Day gift, but I think it will be worth the wait.

Was also looking at that but couldn't hold off unti end of June so I got a New Braunfels Hondo Deluxe at Academy. Has the same mods along with cast iron grates. Plus I saved 100. on shipping

geob.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good people giving exceptional advice here. I have the CGSP and for the price, I love it. Did the few mods fairly cheap and it puts out some really great Q and is pretty easy to control. Also, makes a really good grill. Good luck.

Welcome to the site. Only you can decide; but I's ask the little woman for some input. I just started and I went with a Silver Smoker from Char-Griller and am in the process of adding the modifications. If you like grilling you should probably enjoy smoking also. Noting keeps kids happy besides hamburger, hotdogs and marshmellows. Go from there.

I've asked the wife for her input and it was limited to "Whatever I want so long as I learn to do it right". She knows me too well! Anyway, I think I have settled on the one from BBQGalore. I like the thicker metal and that there is a store near me for any possible support issues.

Thanks all for the input!
