I own a technical staffing business specializing in telecommunications.  I started with another company in 2000 as a recruiter and worked for them for 6 years and moved up to Division Manager.  I was offered a partnership from the owner of that company and went out on my own in 2007.

Fiber optic splicer.....splice fiber optics for residential and buisnesses. Phone, internet, and cable tv. Not a paying job but I'm also a volunteer firefighter and EMS for a rural cummunity
I have a hard time finding good fiber splicers!  If you contract and you travel drop me a PM.  I don't have anything right now and only get the occasional call for it but can never find people when I do.

I am a  County Social Worker and do emergency placements of children. The child welfare business can be very stressful not only due to the nature of the biz but also bc California is broke so no raises or new hires in 3 yrs and the caseloads are high. Consequently my down time is essential and smoking is a great way to unwind!

Bureaucrat. I do payroll for a municipal gov't. I used to work for our child welfare agency in charge of their information systems. Two stories from working there:

1. After a meeting about some system or another, a caseworker came up to me and apologized for missing the previous week's meeting. He said that they had one of those child protective services cases where you're called to an apartment where there was allegedly some child abuse and when they entered the home, there was blood everywhere, the floors, walls, ceilings, animal entrails, maybe a voodoo ceremony, maybe something worse. "You know," he said,"one of THOSE cases." "No," I had to say, "I don't know, and I don't want to know."

2. After a highly publicized child fatality in which there were allegations that our agency was somehow at fault, our commissioner called all of the managers into a conference room. He reminded us that the environment is so pressure-laden that it's easy to lose perspective. He said his wife asked him how he could sleep at night with all of this responsibility. He said he told her that he sleeps like a baby, waking up every two hours crying.

Westy, I feel for you. And when people complain about the government, I wonder how they would feel without roads, water, police, laws and other public services and civilizing forces. I apologize if this is the wrong place for this.

OK. I'm off the soap box.
