Hi, My name is Terry I live in Kearney Missouri and love to grill among other things like photography and shooting, I am semi retired meaning that I decided to quit working full time and just do the part time bit. Married, four step sons(all grown and away from the nest) and one fantastic little friend that wont leave my side, that be Scooter the Dachshund.

I use gas and charcoal for grilling but I am in the process of getting a smoker for the first time and what i know about them is what I am told by the guys at work that do it. I haven't decided on what to get yet and am reading all of the reviews that I can, but I am leaning towards the pellet type grills although the others are still in the running. Pellet I'm looking at the Pit Bosses and one of the Traegers and in the wood type the Oklahoma Joe Highland, Char-Griller Smokin Champ so any advice would be appreciated. I look forward to having a good time here and learn some as I go. Old age isn't going to get in my way.

Terry, welcome to SMF!  Glad you are here and looking to step into the smoking world.  Each type of smoker has its advantages, limitations, processes and flavors.  Finding what's right for you is a lot of the fun.  We all have our favorites so its tough to be objective, but we love telling you what we enjoy best about what we use. Just ask!

Have fun!

Ray

Welcome from SC, Terry. It's really good to have you here on this great site. Good luck with your research. As Ray said, it's really hard to be objective. We all have our favorite style of cooker. Mine is a stick burner.

Update to Smokin, I just bought my smoker tonight, its in a box so i wont be using it soon as iI want to do all the sealing as I assemble it. Got me a Oklahoma Joe Highland, looked at a bunch and this model looked like it was a good place to start and if I dont like it well I have another nice grill.

My offset doubles as a big grill too. There are a few ways to play with offsets.

Pellet rigs are better for long steady (and usually reliable) smokes where you can set it and go to sleep for a few hours. Running an offset, you're the guy with the shovel and gauges in the locomotive cab.
