So I don’t know how I have been so lucky, but I originally got into smoking a few years ago by winning a $500 gift card and getting a super basic MES30. The MES 30 started to flake out and MB upgraded me to a super nice MES 30 with window and remote.

Well this year I won the grand prize at our works Christmas party and I’m now the new owner of a Traeger Century 22.

It’s been ok so far, one flame out, and one issue with the pellets not falling to the auger.

I was doing a pork butt for pulled pork, 3 hours in it had a flame out and got the LEr code. I restarted and all was well for the rest of the cook (12 hours). It was around 40 deg and climbing outside with zero wind or rain. This was my first real cook I did with this unit and was able to catch it before it ruined the meat, but now I don’t really trust it. I’m truly confused why a $700 unit wouldn’t have a re-ignite feature right out of the gate, especially on something like a pellet grill. . . I have been eyeballing the Ortech controller with the re-ignite feature but I will give the stock system some more time.

I was smoking the butt at 225 deg and there was pretty much zero smoke, I didn’t want to leave it on “smoke” setting as I wanted the internal to hit 140 deg around that 4 hour period.  So it was rather lacking in smokey flavor.

If the internal temp hits 140 do people then switch over to smoke? Or should I just look into a tube of maze pellet smoker to set inside?  

So far we have cooked 9.5lb Butt, a bunch of burgers, poppers, and a delicious pizza!

One of the most, if not the most frequent complaint from those new to pellet grills/smokers, but not new to smoking, is the lack of smoke flavor.

I was one of them.

The a-maz-n tube is a great help. I use one every cook. I also mix wood chips with pellets when filling the tube.

Pellets. I use lumberjack 100% hickory, maple, ect. Don't confuse with 100% hardwood pellets.
Those are 60% base wood, and 40% of the "flavor" wood. Believe me, it makes a difference.

I also start all of my cooks on the lowest setting for a hr or two. Remember, the 40 to 140 in 4 hrs is for ground meats, and those cuts that have been injected or probed. On longer cooks, I don't add a IT probe to my meats for at least a couple hrs in.

  Awesome, thanks for the great information. I was under the impression that 140 in 4 applied to the solid muscles, good to know on that part!

I will look into making myself a pellet tube, I have the material and tools just need the time.

Do you get your pellets from a big store? the only pellets I have been able to find are a mixture of different wood, I have not been able to find any pellets that made from a single type of wood.

I did a group buy with a couple friends. We got a ton of lumberjack pellets delivered to a local terminal. Came out to .33c a lb. Best i can do locally is blended pellets for $1.00 lb.
Or Amazon for around .60c lb.
