Where is the best place to measure the heat in a smoker? I see that the factory thermometer is at the the top of door.. Is that where I should put my digital probe?

I like to take the pit temp reading right at the level of the grate that I am cooking on.

I  agree with Case, just don't get it too close to the meat or the cold meat will give you a false reading.

From everything that I have read, you want to be in between the heat and the meat.
