Hello all,

Looking at building a new smoker to camp with. Most of our camping is done with a altitude over 6,500 feet. Has anyone had any issues smoking at this altitude or higher? He have camped at over 8,000 feet the summer before last.

Okay should I build it with 3 or 4 1 inch air intakes?

I picked up a Craig list Weber for the top and it is just a bit to small for the drum. Any recommendations on how to fix this?

Thank you for your help.

I have no idea about high altitude but I can answer on the lid. A weber lid is about a half inch smaller than a standard drum. There are numerous ways to make it fit. I use the simplest way which is to bend the flange on the lid out to make it larger. The downside to this is you ruin the ceramic coating on the flange. The other good method is to install a metal ring inside the drum that is the same size as the lid so the lid has something to sit on.

Good luck
Bmaddox, thank you for your input on the lid. I am going to try and use 4 1 inch air intakes and see if that will work. If it does not get the air it needs I can add more or go larger.
Dave, if I did that I think I'd add a 1/3 of another barrel as the lid. You could do a big turkey on top and what ever you want on the lower rack. Thank you for the info.
