Hi  I live in Cedar Rapids Iowa and just sold my offset smoker outfit and am building a drum smoker. I made a lot of inventions for my offset setup, but I could never get the leaks plugged and I can't find a good outfit in my price range, so decided to make the drum smoker.  I just stumbled across a stainless 55 gallon drum and am starting.  However, have a couple questions.

- Most of the drum smokers have expanded steel as a firebox.  Has anyone tried a solid steel ring with the expanded steel in the bottom?  It seems that this chimney affect might make for a more steady bun.  Has anyone tried that?

-All the smoker plans I see have intake draft holes evenly spaced around the bottom.  Has anyone tried a larger single intake?  I don't want to drill any more holes than I need to adjust the proper draft.  I have some 1 1/2 inch stainless pipe and I'm wondering if that would be enough draft both top and bottom.

Any advise?
