I have yet to find a steel yard, locally, that sells "scrap" steel....another words I am forced to buy new steel. Went to pick up the sheet of expanded metal today and asked about 4.5" od round tubing. I don't remember what he quoted me.....but it was pretty damn spendy. Any reason why, assuming I can find the right size "ID" why I can't use a piece of auto exhaust tubing?

He might be quoting you for 4" pipe (which is 4.5" OD). I don't  see any reason why you couldn't use exhaust tubing.

Assuming this is for your chimney?

Stop by some local welding / fabrication shops and see what they have around. We always have people poking around our scrap bin.

Yes, check the fab shops, they will have drops from sheets that are sold for scrap value so if you offer more, you are in business. Exhaust tubing is good, check where they do diesel exhaust, usually 5 and 6" there. Check out Cracksmoker's thread, he's sitting on a goldmine..... and at least in your state.
