Don't get it too hot, just enough to blister the paint so you can get it off with a wire brush on an angle grinder. They can warp a little if they get too hot.
 
Now I can mark with a soap stone. Those sharpies just wouldn't hold up.[emoji]128077[/emoji]. Anyone ever use a garage door spring to help assist in door opening? I am planning on making a couple ribs to weld to the cc door both for handle and hinge mounts and double as bracing for the door to keep it strait.

I'm burning out our 250 gallon tomorrow. (if it's not raining all day) I never thought of it warping. Now you got me nervous.

Been on a long break from the smoker build. A guy at work brought in home built offset smoker on Wednesday so I could cook for our employees a little pre thanksgiving feast. That got me back in gear. I hadn't smoked anything since giving my buddy my first smoker I built as a going away gift (over a year ago). So with the new kick in the butt I mounted my tank to a trailer this weekend. Still a long way to go but glad I started back again. The trailer I ended up going with was originally a hot tar trailer used for assphalt work.
 
I am getting together my firebox idea. Just want to run it by you guys and see if it will work out. By numbers it is much larger than it needs to be. I have to make a little kick down to clear the rear axel. I wasn't sure if that would be a problem. Planning on double doors at the rear of the trailer. Intakes on the lower rear sides and some cooling vents on the upper rear sides of the box. Here is a rough sketch.
 
Being 24" will save you on a few cuts in the 1/4" plate.

You may want to make the top cooling vents smaller so they are only about 20" of the total air intake.

Better to have a firebox on the larger side than the smaller side.

Are you going to do Gull wing doors?

I am still kicking around the idea of single door or gull wing, I will have sliding racks reguardless, so I was thinking a single door would suite me fine. I hadn't realized there was a measurement spec for the top vents. That's good to know. I just kind of figured that up and drew it in the drawing. With a 10 ft sheet I will have very little waste. What I do have left I can use for hinges etc.

Not an orangutan, so I guess that's solves it. Gull wing it is. I was considering just cutting out the 41 inches from that back platform and welding the platform to the sides of the firebox. Or should I just hack off the platform? It's a matter of preference I guess, I could make them function as a platform to hold stuff or a nice warm place to sit on a cold day.....
 
Up to you if you want to hack it off.  I probably would.  Having a perch that close to the firebox does no good.

Don't be afraid to cut a long way down from  the 12 o'clock for the gull wing.

Make the doors before you weld the guides in.   That way if the tank bows out of shape you can use a bottle jack to open up the tank and weld the guide in to hold it in place. (nothing a few love taps with a 15lb sledge won't fix.)

I would probably use 1 1/2 x 3/16 or 1/4" angle for the guides.

And as far as how far down to cut, I've ready 3-5". But this tank is so large in diameter I'm guessing it should be further?

I would probably cut them 12-18" down from 12.  

Yes, the guides that the racks slide on.       Weld the anti flip tabs on before you weld them in the smoker. (to stop the racks tipping when you slide them past halfway)
 
I was looking at some professional builds just seeing different ways they do certain things. I noticed on the langs it looks like the bottom grates sit directly on the rf plate. I thought it was good to have a fare amount of space between the grate and the rf plate. Anyone know why it would be done like that? Honestly I don't like the way they make the two piece lower grate it had a cheesy look imo.
